Course Progression

Foundation Stage 1 and 2 (FS1 and FS2)

Age: 3 years old and 4 years old

Students at GEMS Metropole School are introduced to learning in a fun, welcoming and stimulating environment. At these early ages, children require a lot of care and support through which their curiosity can be nurtured.

The core academic areas of learning in Foundation Stage are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Art
  • Music
  • Personal, social and emotional development

The learning of the core concepts of knowledge is achieved through both lessons and hands-on learning, with play and activities being essential components of our Foundation Stage students’ day.

Key Stage 1: Year 1 and Year 2

Age: 5 years old and 6 years old

By Key Stage 1, students understand the concept of school and are prepared to learn; however, they are still at an age where they require support, as they begin to work out how they, as individualswith unique identities, fit into the world. So building friendships and self-confidence are important areas of development, alongside the traditional and necessary academic programme.

Parent-Teacher-Student communication is of absolute importance, so school becomes an integrated part of student life.

Key Stage 2: Year 3 to Year 6

Age: 7 years old to 10 years old

The foundation of learning has already been laid by Key Stage 2, and students begin to learn at a higher level and apply the knowledge they have gained in their earlier years. Students have a better understanding of their own identities and likes, and they also begin to be curious about areas they are interested in discovering.

Key Stage 2 subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)

Students are encouraged to find solutions by applying developed skills and knowledge. This introduction to independent learning gives them the opportunity to explore possibilities.

Key Stage 3: Year 7 to Year 9

Age: 11 years old to 13 years old

Key Stage 3 students at GEMS Metropole School have the ability to tailor their programme to meet their interests. We support and encourage students to find out their strengths and explore more advanced areas of learning as they prepare for their final years of school and major examinations.
