Jack Luffman
Heads of Sixth Form / Academics & Careers
Hello, my name is Jack Luffman and I am entering my second year here at GEMS Metropole School as one of the Heads of Sixth Form, Head of Careers and BTEC and teacher of Media Studies.
Last year was one of my most rewarding in my career to date, helping to develop the sixth form and its students and seeing so many of our Year 13s move onto many top universities around the world.
I have been in Dubai for five years but before my move overseas, I had worked within the UK Education Secondary Sector for 15 years firstly as an English and Media studies teacher and latterly as a head of department and an assistant head of a sixth form. I have a strong belief that sixth form education is the springboard for the next part of each students’ life journey, whether that be engaging with higher education at a university establishment around the world or indeed entering into the culturally diverse world of work. The continued development of our A level and BTEC provision, our links with local industries and our fledging and successful Work Experience programme means that every students leaves us with a well rounded and relevant educational and vocational experience. Each of our young people are individuals and I hope that with the continued development of the careers education and subject course choices, each can access a bespoke pathway designed to help them access their chosen education and career choices.
My breadth of experience across all areas of education has certainly equipped with the knowledge, skills and desire to inspire students to become creative, resilient and innovative learners.
Prior to teaching I was a working journalist for local and regional news in the UK, having gained a BA Hons in Journalism from Staffordshire University .
Originally from Lincolnshire in the east of England, I was educated at the local grammar school before completing my university studies and then taking a year out to fulfill a season of cricket in Australia, a sport that has seen me travel the world; achieve many representative honours and one that now sees me as founding member and chairman of Dubai Wanderers Cricket Club. Sport is indeed a love of mine and I hope to be able to support the school’s PE department and pass on my sporting experiences to the students too.
I live in Dubai with my wife Michelle, who is a marketing and communications manager at one of the city’s leading hotels.
