Georgina Matthews
Alternative Curriculum Teacher (Year 1 to Year 3)
I am about to begin my fifth year teaching children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), but my journey in this field began ten years ago. I first discovered my passion while volunteering at a local charity supporting individuals with learning disabilities. Inspired by this experience, I went on to study Language Sciences and Psychology at the University of Reading, specialising in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), language development in SEN, and sensory processing disorders.
After completing my degree, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in a SEN school and also ran a youth club for children and young people with additional needs. These roles gave me valuable experience in supporting learning both inside and outside of the classroom, and highlighted the importance of building children’s confidence through nurturing and inclusive environments.
In 2021, I began my teacher training at the University of East London. Since then, I have taught in schools across Essex and London, before moving to Dubai last year to join an Outstanding SEN provision. Teaching internationally has further strengthened my belief in inclusive practice and the importance of creativity, adaptability, and care in helping students access their learning and reach their full potential.
As a teacher, I am committed to bringing fun and creativity into my lessons while maintaining a calm, supportive atmosphere that promotes students’ physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. I am passionate about finding strategies that make learning meaningful and accessible for every child I work with.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy watching live music, dancing, travelling, and cooking, which all inspire me and give me fresh ways to connect with my students. SEN education is more than just a career to me—it is a vocation that I am proud to pursue with passion and dedication.
