Secondary SENDCO

Hello, I’m Amy Harrison, and I’m proud to be the Secondary SENDCo at GEMS Metropole. Since 2016, I’ve had the privilege of being part of this dynamic and inclusive school community, where I’ve dedicated my work to ensuring that every student feels supported, respected, and empowered to thrive.

Originally from South Africa, I’ve worked in the field of special educational needs for over fourteen years, both in my home country and internationally. My journey in education has always centered around inclusion. From the very beginning of my career, I’ve been driven by the belief that all children, regardless of ability, background, or learning style, deserve a high-quality education that recognises and nurtures their strengths. At GEMS Metropole, I’ve had the opportunity to turn this belief into action every day.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role has been leading the development of a tailored alternative curriculum for students who require a different approach to learning. This programme was born out of a genuine need to create space for students who often fall through the cracks in a traditional setting. Watching them grow in self-belief, find joy in learning, and achieve personal success has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career.

However, inclusion goes beyond curriculum design. It’s about creating a culture where all students feel that they belong, not just in the classroom, but in the heart of the school community. I work closely with teachers, support staff, leadership, and families to ensure that individual needs are met with care, creativity, and collaboration. Whether we’re adapting teaching strategies, putting the right support plans in place, or simply listening to a student’s voice, everything we do is guided by compassion and purpose.

For me, learning should always be relevant. I’m passionate about connecting classroom content to real-life experiences so students see value in what they’re learning and feel motivated to take it beyond the school gates. Education should empower students with confidence, resilience, and the practical skills they need for whatever lies ahead, whether that’s further education, employment, or independent living.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside a passionate team of educators and support staff who share this vision. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive school where difference is not only accepted but embraced, and where every young person has the opportunity to grow, contribute, and succeed.
